Not exactly unexpected

It's been fairly quiet around here as far as injuries go. Considering we have three kids who play hard. Our last major incident was Abby's failed attempt to fly a couple summer's back. Mike and I both broke bones at their ages, so we've been waiting, trying to be protective, praying for God to watch over our crazy kids. And He has.

Yesterday Connor was riding down the alley with his friends. His bike is only a week old, so he's still figuring it out. He lost control going down the hill at the end of the alley. Straight ahead was the street. Now, he may not be smart enough to figure out how to stop, but he is smart enough to know the street is a bad idea. So he turned hard, the bike skidded around, and he fell over. There were battle wounds. A bleeder on the knee and a scrape on his shoulder. But all in all he looked pretty good. Once the bleeding stopped, though, he started saying his arm was broken. It didn't look broken. It didn't feel broken. It didn't act broken. I put some ice on it and hoped it really wasn't broken. Within a half hour, though, it was looking pretty unusual, and he was still refusing to move. At all.

So we took him in and sure enough, it's broken. He handled it all like a champ. He's pretty disappointed he's going to miss swimming lessons AND he can't ride his bike or scooter for awhile. Plus it's a little confining for a kid his age to spend the best day of the year so far lying down with his arm elevated. But he's doing great and doesn't seem to be in much pain. As a parent, I have to say thanks to God, because it could have been so much worse. And so far, this is WAY less work than, say, a case of the stomach flu. For me anyway. We're also thankful that we live five blocks from Mary Bridge and have fabulous friends and neighbors to help us out when things go crazy around here. I'm sure it won't be the last time!
